I have a 1968 Cougar GT. It has the 390 GT in it with the C6 3 speed auto trany. It has almost all original parts, it just needs new paint, carpet, bucket seats, brake lines, gas lines, and a new exhaust. Then just a few minor things here and there. I have a cougar book from mustangsunlimited so I can get almost every stock part I need.. One problem... The motor will not stay stock. It is already bored .30 over, and I have plans for an Edlebrock Performer RPM intake, either a 750 to 800 cfm carb and I found a set up that is supposed to give me 402 HP. I plan on getting a different cam and getting a port and polish with valve job. Possible shaving the heads to raise compression from 10.5:1 to something a little higher. Hopefully I can get a little more then 402 HP with those extra tweeks. Any suggestions on parts would be greatly appreciated. I am having a very hard time finding performance parts for the car. I have not found any headers that cost less then $400 and so far I have found only one set. I prob could use a wiring guide too. I'm hoping I will be enjoying her by mid summer this year, if not sooner. Any thoughts from anyone?

Those headers are worth every penny when compared to the manifolds on that Cougar.
I think 10.5:1 is a very nice Compression Ratio. I wouldn't shave the heads, because it will bite you in the ass on Piston/Valve clearance when you change out the cam.
About that cam...get a custom stick. A retrofit-hydraulic roller will unleash some power over a flat tappet stick.
C-6 huh? Grape Ape loves the hell out of those trannies, but I think it would rob a lot of power from your Cougar. You got a nice little C-4 laying around anywhere?
A 750 Demon carb should suit your car just fine. If you're gonna wrap the piss out of her, an 850 may be more suitable.
Got any pics of that Cougar? Those are cool looking cars. :tu:

C6's rob power? No wonder my F-150 feels slower since we swapped in the C6 to replace the dead AOD.
VETTKLR
Damn straight, it takes more power to run that monster C-6 than it does the smaller C-4.

Pictures will be coming soon. I will be making a webpage showing everything I do to it. I'm still searching for a wiring guide, the person before me just butcherd everything on her. There are wires just everywhere and looks as if I might just need to rip it all out. Anyone know what the widest sized tires that will fit on it? The stock tires are 195/70r14 and I plan on keeping the stock rims seeing they are in perfect condition, I just need something that will hook up a little better. I also have no replacement for the C-6, but atleast I will prob never blow it out. And ty for the info with the clearance with the valves, I didn't take that into consideration... just was thinking HP with the compression.. I just need to calm down and take my time on her. I just got her hauled to my house a few days ago and plans are flying through my head.

Courgarman, check out www.holcombmotorsports.com , they have lots of FE Big Block parts.
Hey VettKlr, there was never a C4 mated to an FE.
Also, I'm pretty sure an AOD would suck more power than a C6. If not, who cares, C6's are tough as hell. I just like the light weight of the C4.

Hey congratulations on the 390 cougar project, this forum always needs another FE fan. I've got four of them, all marine 427s.
The heads on the FE are really quite nice, easily modified, but do NOT make the common mistake and grind out the accleration bump, its' there for a purpose. I'd think 750 is all the carb you need. There's nothing magic about making 400-hp with a 390, they had a stock one that did it. Check back here in a few days, I don't know where, or have time now, but there's a great 390 buildup on the v drive forum

Well, it's taking me some time to get the funds to work on my cougar, but I finally have some. I putting in two floor boards and doing some sanding and painting right now. On my list to order is the Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, a roller cam set (havent picked the one i want yet), 750 CFM Carb (not sure Edelbrock or Holley, my brother hates Edelbrock), I also found some Headman Headers for $200 from a friend, and I'm going with the MSD 6AL. All I have to do is sell my 91 s-10 and I have the money to buy all of it. Then I will getting it together in no time. The website that I'm working on and is no where near finished is http://cmca.20megsfree.com/index.html The only link that works is the 1968 Cougar link. I also don't have many pics up seeing I have dial up and it takes forever. Any other thoughts or comments would be great.

A lot of extra cash over the E-Brock or a Holley, but they seem to be worth it.
The Demons that is.

The Demons that is.
750 Holley Double Pump, $395.88
750 Speed Demon mechanical secondaries. $439.00
$43.12 difference
4150 Holley 830 cfm annular boosters $659.00
850 cfm Mighty Demon annular boosters $499.00
$160 less than the comprable Holley
Prices out of the Summit catalog
The price diffrence isnt drastic untill you get into the Dominator style carbs, and it still isnt that diffrent
Edlelbrock is cheeper than both of them, but there basicly just a good daily driving street carb
Mr. P
I like the FE cylinder heads, they're a great wedge head design, but don't ream out the accelerator bump on the intake port, or you will actually be hurting the power.
Ever consider a set of Edelbrock aluminum heads???
