I bought a used Edel. Victor Series Water pump (pn#8840) for my Windsor motor. Last week at the test-n-tunes, the thing seemed to be ticking/knocking like a vane was broken in the thing. I took it off the car tonight, and it seems OK to me.

The knocking was coming right from it. When I pulled the serpentine belt off, it went away.

Anyone else had this problem before with this kind of water pump?

It's ran fine for 3 or 4 months and now I'm not happy.

I believe this is my first tech post here, so let's see some good input!

Never heard of it! Actually, I haven't heard of any problems from their pumps, but hey.. Defects happen. That might just be the case.

VETTKLR
I thought the impeller was coming apart or picked up some debris somehow and was beating it into the housing.

Hell if I know.

Grape Ape
Prolly a bad bearing... :awshit: Hope not...

VETTKLR
Bad bearing in the water pump?

I hope that's what you're suggesting!!! I think I eliminated the motor when I took off the serpentine belt and all you could hear was the roller rockers clicking off.

cswrench
do you have an automotive stethoscope? (sp) That is how I pinpoint most of my noises in the belt drive system. I am not really versed on their waterpump but I thought that they were rebuild-able.

VETTKLR
I have a shop-vac hose that I'm going to throw in the car next time I go out!!!

Redneck Stethoscope to the max, baby!!!

I'm torn between buying a new pump and putting this one back on. I still have the factory 302 pump, but that thing looks like it can't circulate shit compared to the Vic. pump.

I tell you what...I'm gonna slap on the factory water pump tomorrow evening and drive the shit out of it for a little bit. We'll see how that goes.

I got to thinking and it could have been a stuck roller lifter...kinda grasping at straws here, but what the hell. Maybe whatever was blocking the lifter was dislodged when I shut the motor off to remove the serpentine belt. When I fired it back up, the sound was gone. About 30min-1 hour after I did that, I started the car with the serp. belt on...no noise.

At this point, all that I'm totally positive on is this Bud Light tastes very good tonight!

I stuck with the factory pump, even on my 408. I'll go electric someday, but since it was meant to be a street driver, I thought I'd better use a normal style pump... The actual pump from my 302HO seemed like the right one :btg: I just got a new one and it works great, even with a hot engine, with all the extra cubes and I don't even have an aluminum rad. "Street driver" for real... But that was then... So it soon changes to lighter stuff that works better for track use.

I think the factory one will work for you too.

VETTKLR
I'll give her a shot tomorrow.

Thanks, Stinky Monkey!

:pal: Sure thing, JERRRRRRRK! :rl:

Oh, and good luck with it, JERRRRRRRK! :flip:

I've seen this knocking pump noise before...never bothered to find out why though. Before you put that POS stock pump on call Scummit and order a flow cooler disk for it. Those things make a HUGE difference in the amount of flow.

Grape Ape
Now why ya wanna go and call the stock pump a POS? :flip: They've logged millions more miles than any other design, I'll betcha! I don't have problems with mine, but I will be replacing it eventually.

to back grape i run a stock pump on my low 10 sec. 86..... i run it on the street with a 160 thermo and an afco 4 core aluim rad runs 172 all day all night..... vettkilr sounds like a bad bearing, best thing to do is take the backing plate off..(you will need a new gasket set and lots of rtv)when i removed mine i found ass loads of gunk in these small passages back there it was blocking the flow causing the old 306 to over heat... new combo should generate more heat but runs way cooler.....aint nothin wrong wit the stock pump,... mines pushing 18 years and i spin it to 7200 rpm!!!!!!

VETTKLR
OH yeah.....forgot about this post........

It was a bad water pump. I put my stocker back on, and the noise went away.

Moral of the story:Y'all don't go buying used Water Pumps, no matter how gooda' shape they say they are in.
