I have just purchased a 66 mustang coupe. It was supposed to be 289 but I have discovered that it is a 302 . The heads inside the valve cover has stamped on it 302 and also 1A15..how can I tell what year my engine might be It has an edelbrock intake with TORKER 289 on it and a carb that says 1406 and 0521 and weber on the side,,Any help would be appreciated..no tags on block that I can find...
Thx

I believe the head was cast on Jan 15 1971...does that mean the whole engine is a 1971. 302....

As I said in the PM, take the starter off. The block code is behind the starter.

I will do that thanks again. Im just researching the intake manifold and carb...looks like the previous owner put a high performance intake and manifold on this car....hope the tranny and rear end will match .

Also, just because the heads are from a 302, don't rule the engine as not being a 289. Someone may have swapped the heads at some point, for whatever reason (i.e- overheated, burnt vakves etc).

Also, 1406 is Edelbrock's part number for the 600cfm manual choke carb.

The only "major" difference between 289/302 is a slightly longer stroke. The pistons are 4" on both motors.

Yup, 2.87" for the 289, and 3.00" for the 302.

221/260/289 crankshaft part # is: C3AZ-6303-F , or it will be very close to that.

302: C8AZ-6303-A, So pretty much all 289 cranks will have the '63 date on them "C3". C= decade (a=40's,B=50's, C=60's etc), and the number is the year.
